On February 2, over 150 individuals will convene for the London and Middlesex Local Immigration Partnership Action Planning Day in order to form the London and Middlesex Local Immigration Partnership sub-councils. Each sub-council will address one of the identified areas of the Council’s focus: Education; Employment; Health & Well-Being; Inclusion & Civic Engagement; Justice & Protection Services; and Settlement. This will prepare the community to take tangible steps towards the integration of immigrants.
The London and Middlesex Local Immigration Partnership (LMLIP) is a collaborative community initiative funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) and is a joint project of CIC with the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration and the Association of Municipalities of Ontario. The LMLIP is co-chaired by the City of London and United Way of London & Middlesex.
"The Local Immigration Partnership is the next step in our community's proud history of responding to the need, and creating and delivering relevant services for immigrants who choose London as their new home," says Elisabeth White, Manager of Employment & Strategic Initiatives, City of London. "Our community strives to provide the best possible experience for all citizens and this partnership will enhance existing partnerships, strengthen strategic approaches and develop supports to reinforce the rich fabric of our community."
“Meeting the needs of newcomers to our community is a key part of being a welcoming, vibrant community,” says Kelly McManus, Director, Community Services, United Way of London & Middlesex. “When we support immigrants’ employment, education, health and well-being, we are ensuring positive outcomes for these individuals, their families and our community as a whole.”
“The initiative’s first community consultation meeting, held last fall, had an overwhelming response indicating that the community is willing to put immigration issues on the radar and take action,” says Elisabeth White. “As a result, the project’s terms of reference reflect the valuable input of a broad range of community voices.”
The purpose of the London and Middlesex Local Immigration Partnership is to strengthen the role of local and regional communities in serving and integrating immigrants into our community. The project will provide a collaborative framework for, and facilitate the development and implementation of, sustainable local and regional solutions for successful integration of immigrants to Ontario. This will enable our community to put immigration on its overall planning agenda and benefit from the successful social and economic integration of new immigrants.
