For an incredible tenth consecutive year, United Way has achieved its Campaign goal. This year’s goal of $8 million was surpassed with a total contribution of $8,103,200.
The United Way’s campaign slogan of “United we can”, rang true when representatives unveiled the results of the organization’s 2010 fundraising campaign.
United Way of London & Middlesex has achieved its Campaign goal for a tenth consecutive year. This year’s goal of $8 million was surpassed with a total contribution of $8,103,200. This spectacular achievement is a 5% increase over the 2009 Campaign achievement.
“I am overwhelmed by the generosity of our community,” says Carol Stephenson, 2010 Campaign Chair. “This achievement tells me that residents of London and Middlesex County care about their friends and neighbours and understand that investing United Way in creates a better community for us all.”
“We all thought the $8 million campaign goal would be a challenge, but given the need to respond to the complex challenges many thousands of people in our community face, we thought it was imperative” says Andrew Lockie, CEO of United Way of London & Middlesex. “This tremendous result is a reflection of a very generous community working together to make a difference”.

Through the generosity of the people of London and Middlesex, United Way is increasing its allocations to agencies by 5%. These investments, along with a variety of other community building efforts, will help United Way’s to achieve its vision of a community where everyone matters.
United Way is a leader in identifying the root causes of social issues and bringing together people and resources to find lasting solutions. Increased investment will strengthen United Way’s ability to support our community and address emerging issues such as poverty, literacy and cultural diversity.
Strategic initiatives funding:
From recommendations by experienced volunteers and United Way staff, United Way’s Board of Directors makes short-term investments each year that address emerging issues.
Donor-designated funding:
Donors are able to direct their gift to one or more organizations of their choice. These designations, when directed to United Way funded agencies, are in addition to the agency allocations.
United Way-funded agency allocations:
The agency funding decision process is a detailed review led by a team of experienced volunteers, to ensure the investment of Campaign contributions in programs that provide proven results for our community. For 2011/2012, United Way will invest a record $5,443,000 in programs and services throughout London and Middlesex.

Some of the investments this year include:
Expanding our impact through new investments
To create lasting change in our community, it is essential that United Way is open to innovation, new ideas and new partnerships. Thanks to increased contributions, United Way will provide funding to three new programs: Life Skills at the Unity Project, the Focused Family Therapy & Internship program at Vanier Children’s Services and the Mentorship for Newcomer Success program at WIL Employment Connections in partnership with the London & Middlesex Immigrant Employment Council.
Continuing investments with traditional partners
United Way continues to fund all agencies that continue to operate from 2009 investments. Of these agencies nearly half received increases of greater than 1% and three received increases of over 10%.
Strengthening the capacity of nonprofits
United Way is a leader in developing leaders and skills in the non-profit sector. We do this to strengthen the sector, and our community, as a whole. From providing training in outcome evaluation to facilitating partnerships and mergers, our goal is to help organizations maximize their effectiveness and their impact in people’s lives.
An example of this work is a partnership between the London Coffee House and Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) London-Middlesex Branch. With the support of United Way, effective April 1, 2011, the London Coffee House will dissolve and become a program of CMHA. This evolution will ensure that a critical program in our community will continue, with increased capacity and access to mental health professionals to better meet the needs of our community.
