Literacy in London and Middlesex

In 2006, United Way of London & Middlesex, together with the Thames Valley District School Board, London District Catholic School Board and the City of London, identified that literacy is a growing concern in our communities.

In partnership with the City of London, United Way commissioned Investing in Children to prepare a report to paint a picture of the current state of literacy in London and Middlesex County.

This report, Literacy in London and Middlesex: An Opportunity to Reach our Full Potential, is a starting point to build community awareness and action on the issue of literacy.

Literacy in London and Middlesex: An Opportunity to Reach our Full Potential

Why did United Way take on the issue of literacy?

United Way is dedicated to improving the quality of life of all people in our community and helping individuals, families, neighborhoods and communities reach their full potential.

As a leader in understanding root causes of social issues, we recognize that literacy levels can determine one’s power, participation and progress in society. By building people’s skills in reading, writing, mathematics and even technological literacy, we equip them with the tools they need to reach their full potential.

United Way’s role is to bring together people who have an interest in building literacy in our community. Together, we can take collective action to make real, lasting change in London and Middlesex.

In January 2008, United Way brought together a Literacy Implementation Committee comprised of literacy service providers, government and other community leaders who are committed to enhancing literacy in London and Middlesex. This committee was tasked with developing an Action Plan that will outline local, measurable responses to these findings. The Action Plan was released on International Literacy Day, September 8, 2008.
