New report reveals a widening wage gap between
men and women in Canada

&

It just doesn’t pay to be a working woman in Canada today, according to a new report released by the Canadian Labour Congress.

In fact, for today’s younger, more educated working woman, it pays a lot less than it did just 10 years ago. According to the report, Working Women: Still a Long Way from Equality, women in Canada who worked full-time, full-year jobs in 2005 earned just 70½ cents for every dollar earned by men in full-time, full-year jobs.

In response to these findings, on International Women’s Day, the Canadian Labour Congress launched a year long campaign to highlight and suggest solutions to the ongoing economic inequality experienced by women in Canadian society.

In over 30 cities and towns across the country, women are gathering to discuss wage inequity, the lack of child care, unequal access to Employment Insurance and low and inadequate pensions.

Women will be planning a series of actions directed at raising awareness and challenging our elected officials to take action to eliminate economic inequality.

Every year since 1977, Canadians have marked International Women's Day by celebrating progress toward women's full participation, reflecting on the challenges and barriers that remain, and considering future steps to achieving equality for all women, in all aspects of their lives. International Women's Day provides an opportunity to celebrate the collective power of women - past, present and future.

Canada’s theme for International Women’s Day 2008 was Strong Women, Strong World. &

This theme draws in part from the fundamental beliefs underlying the modern women’s movement, that “a woman's place in society marks the level of civilization of that society." This refers not only to the empowerment of women as a means to bring about positive and fundamental social change but to the critical roles that women play as leaders, policy-makers, caregivers, educators and international peacemakers. The theme also draws from the fact that empowered women can, and do, play a fundamental role in current and future efforts to preserve and protect the world's natural environment. & As the International Women’s Day 2008 theme, Strong Women, Strong World, makes clear, when we empower women, we secure a brighter future for everyone.
